Your child opens a book on the phone, tablet or computer and reads a page out loud. Zen Reader listens, follows along, and marks every single character: the ones they read correctly, the ones they substituted, the ones they skipped and the ones they added. It checks their Mandarin tones too, so a character said with the wrong tone is caught rather than waved through.
Then it gives your child a warm, per-line report — what went well first, then what to try again — and it gives you the same reading as a score, a list of the characters to work on, and a note about any tones, in English.
What “listens and corrects” means here
- Per-character marking, not a pass mark. You see which characters were right and which were not, on the page, in the order they read them.
- Tones are checked. Mandarin lives or dies on tone, and a reading app that only matches syllables will tell a child they were right when they weren’t.
- Did they understand it, or just say it? After a scored reading, Zen Reader asks a few questions about what actually happened in the story — in your child’s own language, so a wrong answer means they missed the story rather than that they couldn’t read the question.
- It reads back to them. Stuck on a word or a whole page? Zen Reader reads it in clear Mandarin and highlights each character karaoke-style, as many times as they like. Turn on Echo and it pauses after each line for them to say it back.
- Practice mode saves nothing. They can stumble, repeat and try again with no score kept and no record of it. Scoring mode is one tap away for when they want it to count.
You don’t have to read Chinese to use it
That is the whole point. Every book page carries pinyin and an English translation, every report is written in English, and the reading level of each book is worked out for you. You choose the books; the app does the Chinese; you see how it went. No part of it asks you to judge whether what you just heard was right.
It sits alongside school and tuition rather than replacing anything: the books are the ones your child’s teachers set, and with your permission a school or tuition teacher can be linked to your child and see the same reading reports between lessons.
A mother tongue or language reading app, not only a Chinese one
Parents search for this in different words — a mother tongue reading app, a language reading app that listens to your child and corrects them, an app that checks reading aloud. It is the same job, and Zen Reader does it the same way whichever words you used to find it.
What matters is which languages it reads today: Chinese and English. Both get the full treatment — the listening, the per-word marking, the reading level, the reports. How a reading is checked
- You add the book. Import a PDF, or photograph a paper book with your camera. Zen Reader reads each page and adds the pinyin and an English translation.
- Your child reads it aloud. One page or the whole book, in practice mode or scored, as many times as they want.
- You get the report. Score, per-character marks, tone notes, comprehension answers and the reading level — on your phone, in English, for each child separately.

Questions about reading aloud
Is there really an app that listens to my child read Chinese and corrects them?
Yes — that is Zen Reader’s main job. Your child reads a page aloud, the app marks every character as correct, substituted, skipped or added, checks the Mandarin tones, and gives a score for the page. Your child sees an encouraging per-line report; you see the same reading in English.
Does it check tones, or only the characters?
It checks tones. A character read with the wrong tone is marked, because in Mandarin a wrong tone is a different word — an app that only matched syllables would tell your child they were right when they were not.
What if I don’t read Chinese myself?
Nothing in Zen Reader asks you to. Every page carries pinyin and an English translation, every report is in English, and the app reads the book aloud in clear Mandarin when your child is stuck. You choose the books and see the results; the app does the Chinese.
Can it listen to a mother tongue other than Chinese?
Reading is checked in Chinese and English today. Malay and Tamil are not supported yet, and we would rather say so here than have you find out after paying. More languages are on the way.
Does my child need to be online to read?
No. Books you have already opened, and their pictures, are kept on the device, so a reading can happen with no connection and syncs back as soon as there is one.
Is the feedback harsh? My child is nervous about reading aloud.
